International Women’s Day Protest
We Demand An End To ICE Contracts For Immigrant Prisons!
As part of the Shut Down Berks Coalition, we marked International Women’s Day, March 8th, with a day of action. We protested in front of the prison to demand the permanent closure of the Berks immigrant prison.
At the beginning of 2022, the Biden administration and ICE converted the Berks County Residential Center, which previously incarcerated immigrant families, into an immigrant women’s prison.
No form of detention is acceptable or humane and it has to end. We demand the repurposing of the building into a health and human service facility not a jail for immigrant women.
You can read more about this protest here. We demand President Biden use his power to end ICE contracts for immigrant prisons and immediately close detention centers in Pennsylvania, including Berks County Residential Center, Moshannon Valley Regional Detention Center, Pike County Correctional Facility, and Clinton County Correctional Facility.
It’s really interesting to read about the action taken by the Shut Down Berks Coalition. Converting the Berks County Residential Center into a facility for immigrant women rather than closing it down completely feels like missing a real opportunity for community reform. Demanding that space be used for actual health and human services instead makes a lot of sense. Between following complex human rights issues like this and managing my own daily work I even had to ask a colleague to help with my assignment tasks recently just to free up time it’s tough to keep up. I wonder if the local council has engaged in any formal discussions about alternative uses for the site since the protest?

On March 8, 2022, the Shut Down Berks Coalition marked International Women’s Day with a protest in front of the Berks County Residential Center, demanding an end to ICE contracts for immigrant prisons. Activists called for the facility to be permanently closed and repurposed into a health and human services center instead of housing immigrant women. Standing up for justice and human rights is crucial, and just as students seek help with assignment to navigate challenges, advocacy helps communities address critical issues effectively.
